Philanthropy’s Promise Public Statement

The Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation has sought to enrich the lives of women and children in the Long Beach area of Southern California since 1989.
We recognize that philanthropic resources are limited in the face of the enormous challenges around us.  We accept the responsibility of maximizing the impact of our giving, addressing both immediate needs in our community and the systemic change needed to eradicate root causes and develop sustainable solutions.  Our very diverse community has high rates of poverty and significant related social problems which are being targeted by many passionate individuals and nonprofit organizations in Long Beach
The Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation supports the efforts of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy and is proud to endorse the goals of Philanthropy’s Promise.  We therefore pledge to direct at least 75% of our grant dollars to benefit economically disadvantaged women and children and at least 25% of our grant dollars to social justice grant making such as advocacy, organizing, civic engagement, and other strategies to promote equity and empowerment for disadvantaged women and children.
